FAQ

Questions about the JSON Formatter

Why does my JSON say Unexpected token?

The status line shows the parser error from your browser. Common causes are trailing commas, single quotes instead of double quotes, comments, or unquoted keys, none of which are allowed in strict JSON.

Does sorting keys change the order of array items?

No. Sort keys only reorders object keys alphabetically at every level; array items stay in their original order.

How do I compare two JSON configs that list keys in a different order?

Run both through Sort keys first. With keys in the same order and the same indentation, the two outputs line up and differences are easy to spot.

Is the JSON Formatter free and private?

Yes. It is free, needs no sign-up and runs entirely in your browser, so what you type is not uploaded. You only sign in if you want to email a result to yourself or save it to your CareerByteCode profile.
