FAQ

Questions about the Token Counter

How many tokens is one word in an LLM?

For English text a rough rule is about 4 characters or 0.75 words per token, so 100 words is roughly 130 tokens. The counter takes the higher of characters divided by 4 and words times 1.33.

Why does my token count differ from the API usage numbers?

Each model uses its own byte pair encoding tokenizer, and chat APIs add a few tokens of formatting per message. This tool gives an estimate for planning, not a billing-exact count.

Do code and non-English text use more tokens?

Usually yes. Code symbols, rare words and many non-Latin scripts split into more tokens per character than plain English, so leave extra headroom.

Is the Token Counter free and private?

Yes. It is free, needs no sign-up and runs entirely in your browser, so what you type is not uploaded. You only sign in if you want to email a result to yourself or save it to your CareerByteCode profile.
