How to use

How to use the Password Strength Checker

  1. Type or paste a password into the box; it never leaves your browser.
  2. Read the length, character pool and entropy in bits as you type.
  3. Check the rating and the estimated crack time at 10 billion guesses per second.
  4. Fix anything listed under Notes, such as no symbols or repeated characters.

FAQ

Questions about the Password Strength Checker

How is password entropy calculated?

Entropy is length multiplied by log2 of the character pool. The pool adds 26 for lowercase, 26 for uppercase, 10 for digits and 32 for symbols, so a 12-character password using all four has about 79 bits.

What crack time assumption does the checker use?

It assumes an offline attack at 10 billion guesses per second against the full character space. Real attackers try dictionary words and patterns first, so treat common words as weaker than the number shows.

How many bits of entropy is a strong password?

The checker rates 60 to 79 bits as Strong and 80 bits or more as Very strong. Below 40 bits is Weak and below 28 is Very weak.

Is the Password Strength Checker free and private?

Yes. It is free, needs no sign-up and runs entirely in your browser, so what you type is not uploaded. You only sign in if you want to email a result to yourself or save it to your CareerByteCode profile.
