What does GEO mean?

GEO stands for Generative Engine Optimization. A generative engine is any AI tool that writes an answer instead of listing links, such as ChatGPT search, Perplexity, Gemini, or Google AI Overviews. GEO makes your page one of the sources it uses and credits.

Where did the term GEO come from?

It comes from the paper "GEO: Generative Engine Optimization" by Aggarwal and colleagues. Researchers from Princeton, IIT Delhi, and others published it in late 2023 and presented it at KDD 2024.

How do AI engines choose which sources to cite?

Most work in two stages:

  • Retrieve: the engine searches an index and pulls a set of relevant pages.

  • Generate: it reads those pages, picks the passages it trusts, and writes one answer with citations.

SEO gets you into the retrieved set. GEO helps your passage get picked in the second stage.

Why does GEO matter for traffic?

Because clicks now follow citations. Seer Interactive data shows cited pages earn about 2.1% CTR in AI Overviews. Uncited pages on the same results get about 0.9%.

How is GEO different from SEO and AEO?

SEO earns the ranking, AEO earns the extracted answer, and GEO earns the citation in an AI-written response. They stack rather than compete.

Unit optimizedThe pageThe answer blockThe passage and its evidence

Does GEO replace SEO?

No. Google Search Central says: "There are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode." Pages must still be indexed and eligible for snippets, so SEO stays the foundation.

Does GEO actually work?

Yes, in controlled tests. The GEO paper tested nine methods across about 10,000 queries. The authors report that GEO "can boost visibility by up to 40% in generative engine responses." On Perplexity, a live AI engine, the lift reached 37%.

GEO methodVisibility lift in AI answers
 Quotation addition ~41% (best)
 Statistics addition ~30-40%
 Cite sources ~30-40%
 Fluency optimization ~15-30%
 Easy-to-understand language ~15-30%
 Authoritative tone No significant gain
Keyword stuffing  No gain; worse on Perplexity

Are these results guaranteed?

No. They are averages from a research benchmark, and AI engines change often. Treat them as a guide to what to try first, then test on your own pages.

How do you do GEO? (7 steps)

Pick the questions AI users ask, answer them in the first lines, then prove every claim. Here is the process.

  1. Find the prompts that matter. List 10-20 questions your buyers ask AI tools. Pull them from Search Console, People Also Ask, sales calls, and forums.

  2. Check who gets cited today. Run each prompt in ChatGPT, Perplexity, Copilot, and Google. Note which sites are cited and why.

  3. Make sure you can be retrieved. Confirm pages are indexed, fast, and eligible for snippets. Don't block the AI crawlers you want citations from.

  4. Answer first, in 40-60 words. Put the direct answer under each question-style H2. One idea per paragraph.

  5. Add sourced statistics. Swap vague words like "many" or "most" for real numbers, each linked to the original study.

  6. Add quotes and citations. Include 1-2 short, attributed quotes. Cite a credible source for every key fact.

  7. Refresh on a schedule. Update numbers when newer data lands, and re-test your prompt list every month.

Which pages should you start with?

Pages already ranking on page one for question or comparison queries. They are already retrieved, and those queries trigger AI answers most often.

What does a GEO-optimized passage look like?

It states the answer, adds a sourced number, and names who said it. Here is the same point written two ways.

Before (vague, hard to cite):
AI Overviews are taking a lot of clicks away from websites these days, so it's really important to optimize for them.
After (GEO-optimized):

AI Overviews cut the top result's click-through rate by 58%, according to an Ahrefs study of 300,000 keywords. "Search is becoming zero-click," says Ryan Law, Ahrefs' Director of Content Marketing. Being cited softens the loss: Seer Interactive found cited pages earn about 2.1% CTR, against 0.9% for uncited ones.

What changed in the rewrite?

  • "A lot of clicks" became a sourced number (statistics addition).

  • A named expert quote was added (quotation addition).

  • Each fact links to its study (cite sources).

  • Filler like "really important" was cut (fluency).

What are common GEO mistakes?

The biggest mistake is chasing tricks instead of evidence. Avoid these:

  • Keyword stuffing: no gain in AI answers, and lower visibility on Perplexity.

  • Unsourced numbers: a stat with no link is hard for an engine to trust.

  • Invented quotes or stats: they damage trust and can spread as misinformation.

  • Burying the answer: long intros push the answer past what engines extract.

  • Blocking AI crawlers by accident: check robots.txt before you wonder why you're never cited.

How do you measure GEO results?

Track citations, not just rankings. Rankings show you were eligible; citations show you were chosen.

  • AI citation count: how often each AI tool cites your domain for your prompt list.

  • Share of AI answers: your citations versus competitors' on the same prompts.

  • AI referral traffic: visits from chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, and similar sources.

  • Search Console trends: AI Overview traffic sits inside overall search data, so watch impressions and CTR together.

❓ Questions readers ask

Can I do GEO without technical skills?

Yes. Most GEO work is writing: clear answers, sourced numbers, and attributed quotes. The technical part is making sure pages are indexed and crawlable.

How often should I update GEO content?

Review key pages every 3-6 months, or sooner when a cited statistic is replaced by newer data.

Does GEO work for small websites?

Yes. AI engines cite passages, not just big brands. A clear, well-sourced paragraph can be cited over a vaguer page from a larger site.
