Local DevOps Lab on Windows Using Ubuntu WSL

Set up a complete local DevOps environment on Windows using Ubuntu WSL, Java 17, Docker, Azure CLI, kubectl, and Minikube. Learn to build and test applications, practise Kubernetes deployments, and develop real-world DevOps skills without requiring a cloud Kubernetes cluster.

Problem statement

Practising DevOps tools often requires a Linux environment, container runtime, Kubernetes cluster, and cloud management tools. Beginners may not have access to a dedicated Linux machine or a cloud Kubernetes cluster, and using paid cloud resources for every practice session can create unnecessary costs.

This lab provides a repeatable local environment on a Windows computer using Ubuntu on Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL). It installs Java 17, Docker, Azure CLI, kubectl, and Minikube so you can practise common DevOps workflows locally.

Why we need this realtime usecase

In real projects, engineers regularly build and test applications, create container images, interact with cloud resources, deploy workloads to Kubernetes, and troubleshoot failures. A local lab helps you learn these workflows before working in shared or production environments.

Benefits include:

  • Lower learning cost: practise locally without needing a cloud Kubernetes cluster for every exercise.
  • Hands-on experience: run Linux commands and use common DevOps tools in one environment.
  • Repeatability: rebuild or reset the lab when you need a clean setup.
  • Safer experimentation: test sample workloads before applying similar concepts to shared environments.
  • Career preparation: build practical experience for DevOps tasks, interviews, and demonstrations.
A local Minikube cluster is for development and learning. It does not replace a production-grade, highly available Kubernetes cluster.
When we need this realtime usecase

Use this lab when you want to:

  • Learn Linux and shell commands on a Windows machine.
  • Practise Docker images, containers, and container troubleshooting.
  • Learn Kubernetes objects such as Pods, Deployments, Services, ConfigMaps, and Secrets.
  • Experiment with Helm, monitoring, and application deployment patterns.
  • Use Azure CLI from a Linux terminal to manage Azure resources.
  • Prepare for DevOps interviews or demonstrate a small proof of concept.
  • Test commands and workflows locally before using a shared development environment.
Prerequisites for the lab

Before starting, make sure you have:

  • Windows 10 or Windows 11 with a supported WSL version and virtualization support.
  • Administrator access to Windows for enabling and installing WSL.
  • An internet connection to download packages and container images.
  • Sufficient CPU, RAM, and disk space. A three-node Minikube cluster needs more resources than a single-node cluster.
