How to use

How to use the Sample Size Calculator

  1. Choose a confidence level of 90, 95 or 99 percent.
  2. Enter the margin of error in percent.
  3. Enter the population size, or 0 for infinite.
  4. Enter the expected response distribution (50 is the safest), then click Calculate sample size.
Worked example

An example, step by step

You enter

95 percent confidence, 5 percent margin of error, population 100,000, distribution 50

The tool shows

Required sample 383; unadjusted (infinite population) 385; z-score 1.96

FAQ

Questions about the Sample Size Calculator

How many samples do I need for 95 percent confidence and a 5 percent margin?

For a large population about 385, using z = 1.96 and a 50 percent distribution. With a finite population of 100,000 it drops slightly to 383.

Why use 50 percent as the response distribution?

p times 1 minus p is largest at 0.5, so 50 percent gives the most conservative, largest sample size when you do not know the true proportion.

How does population size affect sample size?

The tool applies the finite population correction. For large populations the result barely changes, but for small ones the required sample falls noticeably.

Is the Sample Size Calculator free and private?

Yes. It is free, needs no sign-up and runs entirely in your browser, so what you type is not uploaded. You only sign in if you want to email a result to yourself or save it to your CareerByteCode profile.
