What Is Answer Engine Optimization (AEO)?

What is answer engine optimization (AEO)? Google says optimizing for AI search is still SEO. The definition, the origin, and what Google says you can skip.

What Is Answer Engine Optimization in Practice?

Structuring pages so a machine can lift a self-contained, trustworthy answer out of them. In practice, that means direct answers near the top of a section, clear attribution, and pages a crawler can actually reach.

What counts as an answer engine?

Any system that returns a synthesised answer rather than a list of links. In current usage, that covers ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode, Gemini, and Microsoft Copilot.

The term also stretches backwards to cover non-generative answer surfaces, including featured snippets and voice assistants, which is where it came from historically.

Does Google Recognise Answer Engine Optimization?

Google's guide to optimizing for generative AI features states that doing so is "optimizing for the search experience, and thus still SEO", and that its generative AI features are rooted in its core Search ranking and quality systems.

That one sentence settles more arguments than anything else published on this subject. If Google's AI features run on Google's Search systems, then the work that makes you eligible for one is the work that makes you eligible for the other.

What Google says matters most is not a technique at all. Its guide states that "Creating content that people find unique, compelling, and useful" will likely matter more in the long run than any other suggestion it makes, and recommends content reflecting first-hand experience over restatements of what already exists.

What Does Google Say You Can Skip?

Seven things, all named in its generative AI guide. Each one appears on AEO checklists currently being sold.

TacticWhat Google's guide says
New machine-readable files, AI text files, markup, or MarkdownYou don't need to create new machine-readable files, AI text files, markup, or Markdown to appear in Google Search.
llms.txt specificallyFine for other services, but it will not help or hurt your Google Search visibility
Chunking content into small piecesNot needed
Hitting an ideal page lengthThere is no ideal page length
Rewriting in AI-specific wordingNot needed, because the systems understand synonyms and general meaning
Special schema.org structured dataNot required for generative AI search. Still worth using for rich results
Seeking inauthentic mentionsNot helpful

How Is AEO Different From SEO and GEO?

Mostly in vocabulary and in which surface you report on. The practical work overlaps almost entirely.

The bottom row is the honest answer to the comparison. Google's guide applies the same statement to its generative AI features regardless of which label you use for the work.

How Do You Actually Do Answer Engine Optimization?

Six steps, each one supported by something Google states rather than by convention.

  1. Make the page crawlable and snippet-eligible first. Nothing below matters if the page cannot be retrieved or is excluded from snippets.

  2. Answer the heading's question in the first 40 to 60 words of each section. Systems extract passages, so a section that buries its answer under context is harder to lift cleanly.

  3. Make each section survive extraction alone. No unattached "this", no claim whose source sits two paragraphs away.

  4. Add first-hand information that is not already on the web. Google names content reflecting first-hand experience, over restating what exists, as what matters most in the long run.

  5. Attribute every claim in the same sentence as the claim. An extracted passage carries its sourcing with it or loses it.

  6. Delete the seven tactics in the table above from your checklist and your client deliverables.

Step 6 is the one that saves real time, because it is the only step that removes work rather than adding it.

What Can Answer Engine Optimization Not Do?

Four limits worth stating, because most pages on this subject state none.

It cannot promise a citation. Being eligible is not being chosen. Google stated at Search Central Live Bengaluru 2026 that ranking first for a query does not guarantee a citation, and access is a weaker condition than ranking. [internal link: Google AI search myths from Search Central Live Bengaluru]

It cannot be verified on most platforms. Google and Bing publish first-party reports. ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude and Gemini do not, so claims about your AEO performance on those surfaces rest on sampled third-party estimates. [internal link: AI Overview and LLM metrics to track]

It cannot tell you whether citations are worth having. Whether an AI answer sends traffic or replaces it varies by query and business model, and nothing in the definition settles that.

It cannot be generalised from Google's guidance to every platform. Everything Google says you can skip is scoped to Google Search. Another platform could read llms.txt tomorrow, and Google's position would be unchanged.
