FAQ

Questions about the MCP Config Builder

Where is the Claude Desktop MCP config file?

Open Settings, then Developer, then Edit Config: it opens claude_desktop_config.json. Restart Claude Desktop after saving.

What is the difference for VS Code?

VS Code uses a servers key in .vscode/mcp.json and a type for each server (stdio or http). The builder writes the right shape for each app.

How do I keep API keys out of the file?

Use environment variable placeholders and set the real values on your machine. The builder warns when a value looks like a real secret.

Is the MCP Config Builder free and private?

Yes. It is free, needs no sign-up and runs entirely in your browser, so what you type is not uploaded. You only sign in if you want to email a result to yourself or save it to your CareerByteCode profile.
